Where to put things

For some clients it is important that as little as possible is stored behind or under something else.  If you've reached behind a coffee cup for a pen, you'll know this can be a recipe for frustration and disaster.

Ideally there would be a desk top long enough for each of your tools to have its own place, and room to pick it up without knocking something else over.

Where space is limited, however, thinking about a new desk gives you the opportunity to make sure the tools you most use are easy to get to with little effort, like the tools on one of my tool boards in the picture below.

Listing these things and placing them as part of the design is a liberating experience.  The process also shows what spaces then exist behind them for secondary storage of tools used less often.
